It's time to tell the environmentalists!

Date: 2007-08-23

little kid's feet (Tatum 2006)World Vegan Day is Thu 1st November. Tell Sophie Protected email address what you are up to to celebrate and we'll feature it here. It could be any of your favourite veganising activities, and you can focus on the wonderful Green theme of this year's Vegan Week.

(As featured in the Vegan magazine, free to Vegan Society members, Autumn 2007)

Back in December 2002 George Monbiot wrote an article in the Guardian newspaper entitled 'Why Vegans Were Right All Along'. In it he explained that meat consumption and a sustainable environment are not compatible.

The environmental virtue of veganism has long been promoted by some within the vegetarian community but that message has yet to significantly penetrate the public consciousness. The public and the government are not looking to the vegan community for guidance through the looming environmental crisis they are looking to the large NGOs such as Friends of the Earth. Unless we can educate those organisations we will never get the message where it will most count.

  • join a local eco group & share food and information with them
  • become active in eco organisations and promote plant-based eating
  • get the new eco-vegan booklet by the Vegan Society and give it to people & places that care about the planet
  • order and spread copies of the Vegan Society's new eco-vegan booklet and their 'Eating the Earth'Â leaflet
  • share and distribute eco-friendly recipes and food at every opportunity
  • write to your local paper the week before
  • tell your local radio station about World Vegan Day and what you are doing for it
  • support local, regional & national events celebrating veganism for the planet

This is part of a renewed focus on eating to save the planet, let's make it happen together!

Be good to yourselves, good to your fellow creatures and good to the planet.

Spokespersons for Sarah Palin and Tea Party groups have bristled at the suggestion that their violent rhetoric may have contributed to the recent shooting in Arizona that left six people dead and Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in critical condition. The topic is, for the most part, being treated with kid gloves in the press, and the “terrorist” label is conspicuously absent from the discussion.
