Help to stop calf exports

cow looking through bars At Zoe Willetts

5th May 2007 - the event starts at 12:00. and ends at 15:00:00

Description

Compassion in World Farming has been campaigning for many years to end the live export of calves from the UK. Young calves are particularly weak and vulnerable to the inhumane conditions imposed by long distance lorry journeys. They often arrive at their destinations in a state of high physical and psychological stress.

CIWF are stepping up the pressure on DEFRA to ban calf exports as we approach the one-year anniversary of the resumption of exports. There is a strong case for a ban. In the short time since exports resumed, there have been several incidences that have illustrated that the current regulations do not prevent the calves suffering.

In one case, after a shipment of lorries was severely delayed, they continued their journeys across Europe, ignoring the legal requirement to stop and unload the calves for 24 hours rest. Because there is no lairage (facilities to unload and rest calves) at Dover, when shipments cannot sail, lorries are often sent back to their point of origin. This results in calves making repeated long journeys.

Please sign the online Downing Steet petition. Help CIWF send the message directly to the Prime Minister that the British public does not support live exports.

Please join the Demonstration at Dover. On Saturday 5 May, 12pm รข€“ 3pm,CIWF and KALE (Kent Against Live Exports) are holding a demonstration to mark the one-year anniversary of the resumption of exports. Gwyn Prosser MP will be joining us to show his support.

Thank you for your support in bringing an end to this shocking trade.
