Friends of the Earth - Food Strategy Day

Where: Carrs Lane Church Centre, Carrs Lane, Birmingham. B4 7SX
Date: Sat 3rd Feb 2007 @ 10:00 until 16:00 ( past event )
Carrs Lane Church Centre, Birmingham

FoE is planning its 5 year food strategy now.

Today the UK government recognised the enormous effect the meat and diary industry and earlier this month the UN stated that livestock generates more greenhouse gas emissions than transport.

It is essential that FoE stop ignoring that meat and diary based diets are a priority issue for any one concerned about global warming. You can help by turning up at this event as an FoE member...

Join FoE to positively influence their 5 year strategy. Richard Hines is organising the FoE Food Strategy day.

This the introduction for the day:

As some of you might know, last year the two main activities of the food campaign - GM and Supermarkets - merged to form an integrated 'Real Food Team'. In light of this more integrated and holistic approach to our campaigning on food we are undergoing a process of assessment and planning for possible future campaign strands for the team. This day is to invite your feedback on our work so far and more importantly to invite your ideas on possible routes for the future of the food campaign. Although not specifically part of the organisation's current discussions about the next 5 year plan, we hope that it will help feed into the process.

The direction of our current thinking is outlined in the draft paper attached. As we would like to focus more on discussion and less on long presentations on the day we hope that you will have a chance to read this paper beforehand. It is broken into 'Challenges we face', 'Current work and trends' and 'Future strands of work'. There are also sections on our current projects, shorter term future plans for ongoing projects and long term thinking. A table at the end summarises our research on impacts of the food system on the environment.

To facilitate discussion we have listed some questions you could think about in preparation for the day. A rough agenda is attached which could be altered in light of priorities that arise on the day.

We look forward to your thoughts!

QUESTIONS TO KICKSTART YOUR THOUGHTS

  • What do you think are the key threats to the food system at the moment?
  • What are your thoughts on possible stands of work for the Real Food Team in the future (these are described in the background paper)?
  • Do you think our current thinking on possible strands of work could translate into effective local campaigns for you? If so how?
  • What have been key successes and failures in your own campaigning through the last few years?

Here is the draft agenda and background information.
